Today’s population is about 21,345, but way back in 1931, the City of Affton had only 800 residents. As more urban population developed, the people wanted their type of government. Affton incorporated as a village; however, this tiny city does not have funds to meet its financial responsibilities. In 1935, the citizens of Affton voted to disincorporation, and the area has remained without a local government ever since. The more significant part of Affton stays under the direct supervision of St. Louis County.

Two organizations, the Affton Civic League and the Westbrook Fire Protective Association, worked to raise the necessary funds for fire protection. The work of this small dedicated group was a success and today, Affton maintains an exceptional Fire District.

Past landmarks of Affton are all gone, as well as the few remaining farms. In 1998, money for façade improvement was made available to businesses.  Grant money was given to firms to match the amount spent for development. Lots of activity along Gravois improved following the grant like the recent renovation of the local library. In 2003, a new building constructed by the Commerce Bank and so many increases in new buildings followed the next year.
