In 1919, to prevent from being annexed to neighboring Maplewood and have an identity, the residents incorporated itself as a village and changed its name to Brentwood.

Over the years, the community thrived, enjoying growth residentially and economically. Brentwood, today, has nearly 7,700 residents and its business base exceeds 650. Its local economy is strong, and its schools are excellent at all levels. With all of this achievement, Brentwood High School is an awardee for 2006 National Blue Ribbon, and Mark Twain Elementary School is also the 2009 and 2017 National Blue Ribbon Award winner.
